The Guild Hotel Wedding in San Diego | San Diego Wedding Photographer
If you’re searching for a San Diego wedding venue that feels like a blank canvas while still offering character and design, The Guild Hotel San Diego is one of the best options in the city.
Marleen and Tim’s wedding at The Guild Hotel was the perfect example of how this space can be completely transformed into something deeply personal. Their vision was playful, a little funky, and inspired by elevated retro dive bar vibes, and the venue delivered on every level.
A Design-Forward Wedding at The Guild Hotel
Marleen and Tim leaned into a bold and intentional color palette that felt both modern and nostalgic. Their design centered around monochromatic black and white, layered with warm earth tones like taupe, sand, rust, root beer, and mustard. Pops of deep teal, tangerine, and persimmon added depth and personality throughout the space.
With Amorology leading the planning and design, every detail felt thoughtful and cohesive. They have such a strong ability to take a vision and execute it in a way that feels elevated but still approachable.
Florals by Native Poppy brought everything to life. The arrangements added texture, color, and movement without overwhelming the overall design. It all felt intentional, layered, and completely reflective of Marleen and Tim.

For Marleen’s first dress she wore Danielle Frankel.

Marleen’s wedding makeup was inspired by Dakota Johnson at the 2019 Oscars.

Tim’s suit supply tuxedo was completed with vintage butterfly bow tie and cufflinks, Hugo Boss patent leather shoes and a two tone Movado watch that Marleen had gifted him.

Doing a first look was special for Marleen and Tim because they were able to have one on one time. This allowed them to have intimate togetherness before the celebration really took off.

Marleen wanted her girls to pick a dress that reflected their authentic self. With the only priority being black each bridesmaid was able to have their unique personalities come through and shine.

With the help of Amorology their ceremony had a mix of chairs and hairpin benches for seating, including crushed velvet chairs in rust and olive green, creating a dimensional seating offering for their guests. The altar was adorned with various sized pedestals topped with bold structural and sculptural floral arrangements created by Native Poppy.

Before she walked down the aisle Marleen slipped into her second dress by Sebastian Luke.

After the ceremony we snuck out to the roof to take a few sunset portraits.

During the pandemic Marleen learned how much Tim loves puzzles. So they decided to reflect that with their Escort display.

The reception space really brought Marleen & Tim’s vision to life. There were dried sora pods in amber and bleached white and loose marbles atop full draped velvet linens of curry and rust. The centerpieces stayed full of personality mirroring the ceremony approach of sculptural and slightly off the cuff.

Marleen and Tim danced to Miracle by the Foo Fighters for their first dance and it was very meaningful to them because in 2009 Tim put it on a mix tape that he gave her for their first Valentine’s Day.

Alana Jones Mann created a shag cake for the couple to cut and there was white cake with fig filling and pistachio buttercream frosting for all the guests.

Why Couples Love The Guild Hotel for Their San Diego Wedding
As a San Diego wedding photographer, The Guild Hotel is one of my favorite venues for a few key reasons:
1. A true blank canvas ballroom
The ballroom (and gymnasium space) allows couples to completely transform the room. One of the biggest advantages is that there’s no carpet, which immediately elevates the look and feel of the space and photographs beautifully.
2. Stunning getting ready rooms
The getting ready spaces at The Guild Hotel are some of the best in San Diego. They’re bright, thoughtfully designed, and set the tone for the entire day. Starting the day in a calm, beautiful space makes a huge difference, both for the experience and for photos.
3. Beautiful outdoor light
The outdoor courtyard offers soft, filtered light that is incredibly flattering and ideal for portraits. It’s one of those spaces where you don’t have to fight the light, everything just works.
4. A venue that adapts to your vision
Whether your style is modern, editorial, romantic, or something more playful like Marleen and Tim’s, The Guild Hotel allows you to create something that feels completely your own.
A San Diego Wedding That Felt Personal and Effortless
What made this wedding stand out wasn’t just the design, but how personal it felt. Every choice reflected Marleen and Tim’s personality, while still feeling elevated and cohesive.
That balance is what makes weddings at The Guild Hotel so special. You can go bold, you can go minimal, you can go somewhere in between. The space supports it all.
Planning a Wedding at The Guild Hotel San Diego
If you’re considering The Guild Hotel for your San Diego wedding, it’s an incredible option for couples who want flexibility, strong design potential, and a space that photographs beautifully from start to finish.
The key is working with a team that understands how to bring your vision to life within the space, just like Amorology and Native Poppy did here.
